The Transportation Security Administration has a new tool to help prevent attacks similar to the failed Christmas bombing
attempt. Actually the new tool known as EDT-explosion trace detection-is an old one which has been used to check for traces
of materials used to make bombs on luggage at airports. TSA agents will begin making rounds in airports, asking passengers
to hold their hands for a more personal test. Agents will conduct random sampling of passengers at security checkpoints and
gate areas. The test will consist of an agent who will rub a dry cotton swab across the passengers hand. They'll have an
EDT machine on a cart which will analyze the sample. It will be checked right there, and if you've been handling explosives
they will know it. These tests will be random and unannounced. Agents, may also ask to screen carry-on luggage. There is
some potential for false readings. Glycerin used in some hand lotions can give a positive reading; fertilizers on golf
shoes or clubs can do the same thing. It's reassuring to know that the TSA is doing everything it can to keep ahead of the
terrorists who are looking for ways to circumvent the systems that are in place.
